Meet our Faculty Affiliate: Christian Fong

The Center for Effective Lawmaking (CEL) is happy to announce one of our newest Faculty Affiliates, Christian Fong. He is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Michigan, teaching classes at both the undergraduate and PhD level. Previously, as an American Political Science Association Congressional Fellow, Professor Fong served as an economic policy advisor to Senator Mike Lee. In addition, he spent three years as a Graduate Research Fellow for the National Science Foundation and completed a PhD in Political Economics at the Stanford Graduate Business School. 

Professor Fong’s research is centered on the study of the United States Congress. He works to synthesize ideas from political science, behavioral and labor economics, and psychology to think about American politics; this includes highlighting the importance of relationships between members of Congress in voting decisions, as well as expertise acquisition amongst congressional staff (the basis of an op-ed by CEL co-directors Craig Volden and Alan Wiseman). His research has appeared in the Journal of Politics, PS: Political Science and Politics, Annals of Applied Statistics, and the American Political Science Review. Professor Fong also does statistical methodology research, analyzing the connection between machine learning and inference.
